Once you have checked your JEE results online, it’s important to understand how to calculate your percentile.
Calculating the Percentile
The use of the percentile is to compute the relative performance of candidates who have taken a certain examination.
It indicates the fraction of students who got the same or lower marks in that specific test session in JEE. For example, if a score falls in the 70th percentile, 70% of all scores recorded are lower, and the topper (100th percentile) receives the highest score in the exam.
Percentile differs from % and so affects from the candidate’s raw score. According to NTA standards, the percentile of the overall result will NOT be an aggregate or average of the percentiles of different subjects in the exam.
We require the following metrics to calculate the percentile –
-
- The total number of students who took the JEE Main test during that session.
- The student’s highest raw score in that session of JEE Main.
- The number of students who scored lower than the candidate’s percentile.
As an example —
Total number of students taking the test is 30,000.
Candidate A scores 340 out of 360.
The number of candidates scoring less than candidate A is 29,500.
Percentile = (29,500/30,000) x 100 = 98.333..
The calculation of Percentile Scores is upto 7 decimal places to eliminate bunching effects and decrease ties.
